For example, one of our applications takes like 5 minutes to compile when using implementation in the project dependencies against few seconds when using compileOnly. Then, the resulting file when using implementation is about 800MB, while its under 1MB ... testCompileOnly: Additional dependencies only for compiling tests, not used at runtime. testCompileOnly is just available when compiling the tests, not when executing them. If you need something only at test execution but not for compiling like slf4j bindings or similar, that belongs to testRuntime.
